Steve Perkins (2023)
Overview
On September 29, 2023, Decatur Alabama Police Department officers Christopher Mukadam, Joey Williams, Vance Summers, and Mac Marquette responded to a report from a tow truck driver that Perkins had pulled a gun on him as he tried to repossess Perkins' vehicle.[1][2]
Police claim that Perkins pointed a handgun at them, prompting Marquette to shoot.
Perkins died at the hospital.[3]
The incident was captured on officers' body-worn cameras[4]
Marquette was placed on paid administrative leave.[5] The other officers were moved to administrative duties.[6]
On November 17, 2023, the department completed their internal investigation, concluding that policies were violated. The Mayor will determine any discipline.[6]
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) opened an investigation.[6]
On December 7, 2023, Marquette and two other officers were fired, while a fourth was placed on unpaid suspension.[5][7]
On December 12, 2023, Perkins' family filed a lawsuit against the city, the officers, the towing company, and the bank.[8]
On December 26, 2023, the ALEA completed their investigation and turned their findings over to the county District Attorney.[9]
On January 5, 2024, a jury indicted Marquette for murder.[1]
