Overview

On September 1, 2022, James was arrested in two separate incidents. On her second arrest, the jail refused to take her until she had been medically cleared, due to her possibly being under the influence of a controlled substance. Oroville California Police Department Officer Robert Sasek drove James to the hospital, but released her in the parking lot. James was discovered in the hospital by a security guard, who returned her to Sasek's custody. Sasek drove James from the hospital, and met Sergeant Ali Khan and Officer Isaac Herrera, who all conspired to drive James 15 miles outside of town to the landfill and leave her there.[1][2]

James claims that Sasek did not activate his body-worn camera while transporting her, that he disabled his vehicle's GPS monitor, and that he turned off his cell phone.[3]

After being abandoned, James walked along the undeveloped road and was struck by a car, suffering serious injuries.[2]

James filed a complaint about the incident with the city.[3]

The department opened an internal investigation.[3]

Sasek admitted to leaving James at the landfill.[2]

Herrera admitted to suggesting the plan to abandon James.[3]

Herrera was terminated.[3]

On February 6, 2023, James filed a lawsuit against the department and the officers.[4]

On January 29, 2024, the city reportedly settled the lawsuit for $3 million.[5]
