2021-2023 Computer Crimes
Between October 23, 2021 and January 17, 2023, Nicholson copied and disclosed police records and documents that were considered confidential by law or were otherwise restricted.[4]
On January 17, 2023, a person who had received information from Nicholson regarding an investigation into a child sex crime reported it to the department.[7]
Response Timeline
On December 29, 2022, Nicholson was disciplined by the department because "he disseminated Criminal History Records to an individual that was not authorized to receive such information".[7]
On March 23, 2023, Nicholson retired.[6]
On March 24, 2023, Nicholson was charged with eight felony counts of unlawful acts concerning computers.[6][4]
On May 23, 2023, Nicholson pleaded guilty to eight felony counts of computer crimes. Nicholson entered a 12-month diversion program.[8]
On August 8, 2023, the Kansas Commission on Peace Officers' Standards and Training (POST) revoked Nicholson's law enforcement certification for failure to maintain the minimum requirements for certification, a felony conviction, unprofessional conduct, and a lack of good moral character.[4]
