On January 24, 2023, the Mobile Alabama Police Department notified the Sheriff's Office that Murphy was the subject of an investigation.^[4]

A news outlet reported that the crimes occurred when Murphy was on duty.^[4]

On February 2, 2023, Murphy was arrested and charged with first-degree rape and first-degree sodomy charges.^[4]
