On January 31, 2020, Gill claimed that he had stopped at the side of the road to urinate when someone in a passing vehicle fired a gun that struck his body-worn camera and his vehicle. Gill claimed to fire two shots at the fleeing vehicle before radioing in that he had been shot.[4]

An investigation showed that Gill had fired at his own body-worn camera and vehicle.[4]

Gill was placed on leave.[1]

On January 29, 2021, Gill was charged with felony vandalism and a misdemeanor charge of filing a false police report. Gill faces up to three years in prison.[1][4]

On January 16, 2024, Gill pleaded guilty to misdemeanor vandalism and the false report of an emergency. Gill was sentenced to 150 hours of community service, financial restitution, and surrender of his certification.[4][2]
