2024 Rape of Child
On April 15, 2024, the Halifax YMCA Youth Development Center contacted the Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) about a child who was suffering from serious physical injuries.[2] Investigators found that the victim had suffered broken bones, severe bruising, and sexual violence.[4]
Cugini initially claimed the injuries were due to diaper rash, a fall, and the family dog.[4]
Response Timeline
The PSP Lykens Criminal Investigation Unit opened an investigation.[4]
On April 16, 2024, Cugini was arrested for rape of a child, aggravated indecent assault of a child, and aggravated assault with extreme indifference.[2]
Cugini was suspended.[4]
On April 17, 2024, the agency announced that there were planning to fire Cugini.[2]
On April 18, 2024, Cugini resigned.[2]
In August 2024, Brianna Shoeman was arrested on a felony count of endangering the welfare of a child after investigators found that Shoeman was aware of the injuries and failed to seek medical care for several days.[2]
