On May 25 2017, Duggar and Officer Tom Smith received the Medal of Valor award after an incident where an armed suspect shot Smith before Duggar was able to detain the suspect.[3]

Response Timeline
The California Department of Justice will conduct an independent investigation of the shooting, which is required under state law for officer-involved shootings of unarmed individuals.[4]
In May 2024, the state released their report, finding that the officers acted reasonably to eliminate the deadly threat posed by Zavala.[5]
