2010 Fraudulent Claim for 9/11 Benefits
In 2010, Spinosa claimed to have worked hundreds of hours at the landfill that processed debris from the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center from September 2001 to June 2002. In 2014, Spinosa applied for a monetary award from the U.S. Government's Victim's Compensation Fund (VCF) based on work performed in September and November of 2010.[1]
In 2014, Spinosa's application to the VCF was denied.[1]
In 2017, Spinosa was granted benefits from the World Trade Center Health Program, which paid for medical visits and prescription drugs.[1]
Spinosa actually spent that time on limited work assignment during her pregnancy or out on parental leave.[1]
Response Timeline
Spinosa was charged with submitting false claims, wire fraud, and aggravated identity theft.[4]
On July 6, 2019, the state Division of Criminal Justice Services decertified Spinosa following her resignation or retirement while under investigation.[5][6]
On August 4, 2021, Spinosa pleaded guilty to one count of theft of public money, which carried a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.[1][7][8]
On December 1, 2021, Spinosa was sentenced to two months in prison, four months of home confinement, and two years of supervised release.[9][10]
