2021 Beating of Khalid Vaughn
Sabater charged at Vaughn, tackling him to the floor and repeatedly punching him.
Response Timeline
On July 26, 2021, Chief Clements relieved Rivas of duty (with pay).[1]
On August 2, 2021, Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle announced first-degree misdemeanor battery charges against the five officers involved.[2]
On September 9, 2021, the five officers were arraigned and charged with misdemeanor battery.[3]
On April 11, 2022, Vaughn filed a lawsuit against the city, Clements, Sabater, and other officers, claiming civil rights violations.[4]
In September 2022, the city planned to vote to approve a $119,000 settlement with Vaughn.[5]
In May 2023, the charge against Sabater was dropped due to a lack of evidence and jurisdiction. The state attorney's office announced plans to appeal.[6]
