2024 Death of Wyatt Landon

Officer Involved Critical Incident video

On January 8, 2024, officers stopped a vehicle for having an obstructed license plate. Landon was discovered to be the passenger in the vehicle. Landon had outstanding warrants and officers were actively looking for him after he had fled from officers in another city the previous day. Landon ran from the stop, unknowingly heading toward Rosales, who was on a stakeout looking for Landon.[2]

Rosales exited his vehicle to intercept Landon. Landon drew a handgun and fired at Rosales, who returned fire, striking Landon.[2]

Officers rendered aid until paramedics arrived. Landon died at the hospital.[2]

The vehicle stop and foot chase were captured on an in-vehicle camera. Officers did not activate their body-worn cameras until after the shooting.[2]

Response Timeline

Rosales was placed on paid administrative leave.[3]

The Eastern Idaho Critical Incident Task Force opened an investigation.[2]

On January 24, 2024, the county Prosecuting Attorney stated that Rosales was acting in self-defense, the actions were legally justified, and no charges would be filed.[2]
