Incident Reports
2011 Car Chase
Raja was involved in a "car chase that "should have been terminated."[3]
Response Timeline
In September 2011, Raja was disciplined, as "other steps can be taken in the apprehension that does not involve endangering the public."[3]
2013 Control of Evidence
In January 2013, Raja confiscated pills from a woman who obtained them without a prescription. The pills were discovered in Raja's patrol car more than a week later. "Officer Raja said he never did the report and he never secured the evidence," his sergeant wrote in the file.[7]
Response Timeline
Also in 2013, and possibly from the same incident, Raja received a written reprimand for repeatedly "mishandling" evidence and paperwork, and was called "derelict" in his duties for "careless handling of the documented cases."[3]
2014 Excessive Force Complaint
In January 2014, Raja was dealing with a mentally ill patient at a local hospital. While Raja was holding the patient down, the patient bit Raja's ring finger and would not let go. "Officer Raja struck the patient to her right cheek and to her chin with his right first until she released her bite."[3]
Response Timeline
The department found that the use of force was founded.[3]
2014 Excessive Force Complaint
In April 2014, Raja was trying to control a mentally ill patient at a local hospital. The patient went to kick Raja for a third time, and he "struck her twice to the facial area with a his (sic) closed fist."[3]
Response Timeline
The department found that the use of force was founded.[3]
2014 Complaint
In June 2014, Raja found a man walking out of the woods near a local hospital screaming, "I am gonna kill you". Raja initially drew his firearm, but switched to his Taser after realizing that the man was unarmed.[3]
2015 Death of Corey Jones
Response Timeline
On June 1, 2016, Raja was arrested and charged with Attempted First Degree Murder with a Firearm, which is a Life Felony punishable by up to life in prison, and Manslaughter by Culpable Negligence, which is a second degree felony punishable by up to 15 years in prison.[8]
On July 6, 2016, Jones' family sued Raja and the department, accusing the city of negligence, battery, and use of force, and Raja of battery and use of excessive force.[9]
On November 12, 2016, Raja was fired.[6]
On March 7, 2019, Raja was convicted of manslaughter while armed and attempted first-degree murder. Raja was the first Florida law enforcement officer in 30 years to be convicted of an on-duty shooting.[10]
On April 25, 2019, Raja was sentenced to 25 years for each charge, to be served concurrently.[11]
Raja appealed, claiming that a defendant should not be convicted of both manslaughter and attempted murder in the shooting of a single person.[12]
On April 28, 2021, the Fourth District Court of Appeal upheld the lower court's decision.[13][14]
Raja appealed.[12]
On November 5, 2021, the Florida Supreme Court rejected the appeal.[12][15][16]
