2021 Death of Hunter Brittain
Response Timeline
In July 2021, Davis was dismissed from the department, because he did not turn on his body camera until after the incident.[1]
On September 17, 2021, Davis was charged with felony manslaughter, which carries a sentence of three to ten years in jail if convicted.[1]
On November 15, 2021, Davis pleaded not guilty to the charge of felony manslaughter.[2]
On March 3, 2022, a judge sealed the case, "in the interest of justice".[3]
On March 18, 2022, Davis was convicted of misdemeanor negligent homicide and sentenced to the maximum of a one-year jail sentence and a $1,000 fine. With a misdemeanor conviction, Davis would be eligible to work in law enforcement. Davis filed an appeal.[4]
Brittain's family, the passenger in the vehicle, and a witness who knew Brittain filed a lawsuit against Davis and the Sheriff.[5]
On September 27, 2023, the State Court of Appeals upheld Davis' conviction. Davis could appeal to the state's Supreme Court.[5]
