Incident Reports

2019 Arrest of David Arnold

On August 7, 2019, Kairy and Officer Timothy Oravetz stopped Arnold for having an obscured license plate. Without permission, Kairy searched the glove box and found a handgun. Arnold was arrested for driving without a license and his girlfriend was arrested for the handgun. Their vehicle was impounded.[2]

Response Timeline

A judge ruled that Roberts had no probable cause to search the car, but that the handgun would have been found when the car was impounded and was admissible evidence.[2]

2021 Assault of Marcus Alston

Body-worn camera video

On August 1, 2021, Alston and his friends saw officers "beating" another person. Alston claimed his friend approached the police and was assaulted. Alston asked the officers for their badge numbers and was punched by Roberts.[3] Alston was knocked unconscious. Officers did not render aid.[1]

Roberts claimed that Alston had taken a fighting stance and assaulted another police officer, which is contradicted by the video.[1]

Alston suffered a concussion and a herniated disk.[1]

The incident was captured on body-worn camera video and a witness's cell phone video.[1]

Response Timeline

The department opened an investigation.

Roberts was placed on paid suspension.[4]

In August 2021, Roberts resigned from the Detroit Police Department.[1]

In July 2022, the internal investigation concluded that Alston did not pose a threat to officers when Roberts punched him, and Roberts failed to render aid.[1]

Alston sued Roberts and the Detroit Police Department.[1]

On September 15, 2023, the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) suspended Roberts' license, preventing him from serving as an officer in the state.[1]

Roberts was placed on leave from the Eastpointe Police Department.[1]

On September 15, 2023, Roberts resigned from the Eastpointe Police Department.[1]
