Elmer Lopez-Castaneda (2023)
Overview
On April 13, 2023, officers located Lopez-Castaneda and a passenger in a car from a prior carjacking. Officers ordered Lopez-Castaneda from the vehicle and claimed to see a handgun in his waistband. Officers ordered Lopez-Castaneda to "drop down to the ground now". Lopez-Castaneda drew the handgun, prompting Newark California Police Department Officer Trevor Damewood, Fremont California Police Department detectives Anthony Piol and Jesse Hartman, and Fremont Officer Thomas Degenstein to open fire.[1]
Officers rendered medical aid until paramedics arrived. Lopez-Castaneda was pronounced dead at the scene.[2]
The firearm was an Airsoft replica.[1]
The California Department of Justice will conduct an independent investigation of the shooting, which is required under state law for officer-involved shootings of unarmed individuals.[3]
Video
On May 19, 2023, the Fremont Police Department released an incident video containing footage from the original carjacking and body-worn camera footage from the shooting.[2]
