2022 Arrest of Joseph Sparrow
On September 25, 2022, Ukleja and another officer responded to a burglary alarm at a business. The officers found Sparrow, who was holding a large crowbar. Officers ordered Sparrow not to move. Sparrow "pivoted towards Ukleja", who fired one shot. Sparrow turned to flee and Ukleja fired two more shots. Sparrow fled on foot and was apprehended nearby.[1]
Response Timeline
The Summit County Ohio Sheriff's Office opened an investigation and referred the case to the Ohio Attorney General's Special Prosecutions department.[1]
In March 2024, a case was presented to a Summit County grand jury.[1]
On April 29, 2024, the grand jury indicted Ukleja on second-degree felonious assault as he "did knowigly cause or attempt to cause physical harm" to Sparrow. Ukleja faces up to 8 years in prison.[1]
Ukleja was placed on unpaid administrative leave.[1]
Ukleja pleaded not guilty.[1]
Ukleja resigned "due to recent circumstances", effective July 15, 2024.[1]
