2020 Death of Ashley Wells
On July 8, 2020, Auner was off-duty, driving a vehicle with four passengers. Auner attempted a curve at about 115mph in a 45mph zone and slid into a light pole.[3][4]
Wells died at the scene. Two other passengers were severely injured.[3]
Auner's blood-alcohol content was 0.077, just under the legal limit.[3]

Auner was placed on unpaid administrative leave.[3]
On July 29, 2020, Wells' family sued Auner.[5]
In May 2021, Auner was charged with murder and reckless driving on a highway causing injury.[4]
On May 31, 2023, Auner pleaded no contest to voluntary manslaughter, gross vehicular manslaughter, and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon. The other charges were dropped.[4]
On June 7, 2023, Auner resigned.[3]
On June 16, 2023, Auner was sentenced to 13 years in state prison.[3]
On January 9, 2024, the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) revoked Auner's certification following his felony conviction.[1]
