Incident Reports

2019 DUI Enforcement

On April 14, 2019, Awad conducted a vehicle stop and arrested the female driver for DUI.[1]

The woman faced deportation as a consequence of her arrest. Awad contacted the District Attorney and recommended less-severe charges that would not result in deportation.[1]

Awad and the woman had a single consensual sexual encounter.[1]

In January 2020, the woman's case went to trial, and Awad was subpoenaed from his role as the arresting officer. Awad testified favorably for the woman, drawing the suspicion of prosecutors and jurors that there might be a connection between Awad and the woman. The woman was found guilty of DUI.[1]

Response Timeline

The department and District Attorney's office investigated the allegations of a relationship, which was confirmed. Awad had not notified the department or prosecutors of the relationship before he testified in the woman's case.[1]

In April 2020, the District Attorney put Awad on the Brady List, marking him as untrustworthy and unfit to testify in court.[1]

Awad was fired.[1]

On January 11, 2023, Awad surrendered his state law enforcement credentials, becoming the first officer to be listed on the state's new decertification list.[1][4]
