Christian Glass (2022)
Overview
On June 10, 2022, Clear Creek County Colorado Sheriff's Office Deputies Andrew Buen and Kyle Gould responded to Glass' call for roadside assistance after he crashed his vehicle. They found Glass in his vehicle, and described him as "argumentative and uncooperative" and that he had "armed himself with a knife".[1]
Deputies ordered Glass from the vehicle, but he refused. Glass appeared to be suffering from a mental crisis. Several officers negotiated with Glass for over an hour to exit his vehicle. Deputies broke a window and used bean bags and a Taser "with negative results" before Glass "tried to stab an officer". Police shot Glass, who died.[1]
The incident was captured on the officers' body-worn cameras.[1]
On November 23, 2022, a grand jury charged Buen with second degree murder, official misconduct, and reckless endangerment. Gould was charged with criminally negligent homicide and reckless endangerment.[1]
On November 23, 2022, both officers were fired.[2]
On May 23, 2023, the family's claim was settled for $19 million, to be paid by the state and three agencies. The Idaho Springs Colorado Police Chief acknowledged "that the lack of judgment, poor tactics, and lack of clear command structure resulted in the unnecessary death of Christian Glass". The Clear Creek County Colorado Sheriff gave his "deepest apologies" and acknowledged "that his officers failed to meet expectations" during the incident.[3][4]
On November 2, 2023, Buen pleaded not guilty.[5]
On November 16, 2023, Gould pleaded guilty to counts regarding duty to report use of force by peace officers and duty to intervene. Gould was sentenced to two years of unsupervised probation and was ordered to surrender his POST certification.[6]
On November 17, 2023, 6 other officers were charged with a misdemeanor count of failing to intervene to prevent or stop a fellow police officer from using excessive physical force.[7] Those charged were:
- Colorado State Patrol Trooper Ryan Bennie
- Idaho Springs Colorado Police Department Officer Brittany Morrow
- Georgetown Colorado Police Department Marshal Randy Williams was also charged with third-degree assault for using his Taser.
- Georgetown Colorado Police Department Officer Timothy Collins
- Colorado Division of Gaming Officer Christa Lloyd
- Colorado Division of Gaming Officer Mary Harris
Williams and Collins resigned.[8]
On April 26, 2024, a jury found Buen guilty of misdemeanor reckless endangerment and was unable to reach a verdict on a second-degree murder charge. Buen faces up to 120 days in jail. Prosecutors may retry Buen on the murder charge.[9]
