2019 Assault of Manuel Camacho

On May 15, 2019, Camacho was in jail awaiting a court appearance. Buen, with deputies Jacob Cordova and Nick Dibiasi, attempted to shackle Camacho, using force including choking and kneeling on Camacho's back.[3][4]

Video of the incident was captured by a surveillance camera.[5]

Response Timeline

On December 17, 2020, Camacho sued the deputies, alleging violations of the Eighth Amendment's prohibition on cruel and unusual punishment, and a claim against the sheriff's office for failing to train its employees.[3][4]

On November 16, 2023, the county settled the lawsuit for $15,000.[6]

Response Timeline

On November 23, 2022, a grand jury charged Buen with second degree murder, official misconduct, and reckless endangerment.[7]

On November 23, 2022, Buen was fired.[1]

On May 23, 2023, the family's claim was settled for $19 million, to be paid by the state and three agencies. The Idaho Springs Colorado Police Chief acknowledged "that the lack of judgment, poor tactics, and lack of clear command structure resulted in the unnecessary death of Christian Glass". The Clear Creek County Colorado Sheriff gave his "deepest apologies" and acknowledged "that his officers failed to meet expectations" during the incident.[8][9]

On November 2, 2023, Buen pleaded not guilty.[10]

On April 26, 2024, a jury found Buen guilty of misdemeanor reckless endangerment and was unable to reach a verdict on a second-degree murder charge. Buen faces up to 120 days in jail. Prosecutors may retry Buen on the murder charge.[11]
