Incident Reports

2024 Death of Jason Maccani

Central Area OIS 02/03/2024

On February 3, 2024, Garcia-Alamilla and other officers responded to a call of a man armed with a stick who was reportedly intoxicated and threatening employees at the business. Seven officers located Maccani in a warehouse. Maccani was complied with officers' commands, but dropped his hands and moved towards the officers with an object in his hand that police believed to be a knife or screwdriver. Police reported that Maccani grabbed one of the officers and the less-than-lethal shotgun she was holding. Maccani was shot with less-lethal foam pellets and two bean bag rounds, which were ineffective. Garcia-Alamilla fired his weapon, striking Maccani.[2][3]

Officers rendered aid until paramedics arrived.[4] Maccani died at the hospital.[2]

The incident was captured on officers' body-worn cameras and surveillance cameras.

The object Maccani was carrying was a plastic fork.[2]

Response Timeline

The California Department of Justice will conduct an independent investigation of the shooting, which is required under state law for officer-involved shootings of unarmed individuals.[5]

On February 20, 2024, the agency released the body-worn camera footage.[3]

On February 22, 2024, Maccani's family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the agency and the city.[6]
