Bilal Winston (2021)

Winston's name is also shown as Bilal Ibn Shabazz Winston and Bilal Winston Shabazz.
On May 31, 2021, San Bernardino County California Sheriff's Department Deputy Jose Ortiz attempted to stop Winston, who was riding a motorcycle without a license plate. Winston failed to stop and evaded Ortiz during a pursuit. Deputy Kyle Smit located Winston, who abandoned the motorcycle, fled on foot, and evaded officers. Sergeant Dominic Vaca located Winston, who resisted arrest, shot Vaca, and fled. Smit located Winston, who refused to drop his weapon. Winston raised the gun and pointed it at Smit, prompting Smit to fire. Winston fell to the ground and returned fire. Deputy Jonathan Galindo heard the gunfire and saw Winston shooting at Smit. Galindo fired at Winston.[1]
Officers rendered medical aid to Vaca before he was airlifted to a hospital.[1]
Other depities and a Sheriff's helicopter determined that Winston was not moving. Deputies approached and rendered medical aid. Winston died at the scene.[1]
Sergeant Vaca died at the hospital.[1]
Audio of the incident was captured on officers' belt recorders. The responding helicopter recorded video after the incident.[1]
On September 21, 2023, the county District Attorney determined that the use of deadly force was justified.[1]
