Incident Reports
2018 Arrest of Derrick Rountree
On December 24, 2018, Rountree was riding his bicycle at night without a headlight. Christie and another officer signaled using their cruiser's siren, lights, and megaphone. Rountree continued riding, and the officers pursued in their cruiser. Christie exited the cruiser, ran after Rountree, and tackled him. Rountree's leg was broken in three places by the fall.[3]
The incident was captured on Christie's body-worn camera.[3]
Rountree was charged for the headlight infraction and obstruction of justice. The infraction resulted in a $15 fine and the other charge was dismissed.[3]
Response Timeline
Norfolk police investigated the incident afterward and found no wrongdoing.[3]
On July 24, 2019, family members filed a state civil lawsuit against Christie.[4]
On December 23, 2020, Rountree filed an federal excessive force lawsuit against Christie, claiming violations of his Fourth and Fourteenth Amendment rights.[3]
In June 2021, Rountree was killed in an unrelated shooting.[5]
In 2022, a jury awarded $200,000 in compensatory and punitive damages.[5]
In July 2022, a judge reduced the jury's award from $200,000 to $35,000, claiming that the evidence presented did not support the award and that the jury "misconceived or misconstrued the facts or the law" in making the award as the jury had found Christie "was not grossly negligent".[5]
