On May 24, 2022, a gunman killed 19 children and two adults at Robb Elementary school in Uvalde, Texas. Nearly 400 officers from multiple agencies, including the U.S. Border Patrol, United States Marshals Service, Drug Enforcement Administration, Uvalde Texas Police Department, Uvalde Texas Consolidated Independent School District Police Department (UCISD PD), Uvalde County Texas Sheriff's Department, Zavala County Texas Sheriff's Office, and the Texas Department of Public Safety responded.[1][2][3]
After more than an hour passed, officers from multiple agencies entered the school and engaged the shooter. One officer was shot, and the shooter was killed.[4]
Parts of the incident were captured on officers' body-worn cameras and the school's surveillance cameras.
On May 29 2022, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) opened an investigation.[5]
On June 22, 2022, UCISD PD Chief Pete Arredondo was placed on leave.[1]
On July 17, 2022, a state legislative committee released their preliminary report on the incident, finding "systemic failures and egregious poor decision making" in the officers' response.[6]
On July 17, 2022, Lieutenant Mariano Pargas, the acting chief of the Uvalde Texas Police Department, was placed on leave.[6][7][1]
The Texas Department of Public Safety opened in investigation into their agency's response.[1]
On August 24, 2022, Arredondo was fired.[8] The firing was reported to Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE), which classifies the firing as dishonorable, general, or honorable.[9]
In September 2022, Arredondo appealed his TCOLE status.[9]
On October 7, 2022, UCISD PD suspended Lieutenant Mike Hernandez and officers Adrian Gonzales, Ruby Gonzalez, and Ruben Ruiz.[10]
On November 22, 2022, Pargas resigned.[7]
In January 2023, Arredondo's TCOLE status was upgraded in a default judgment, meaning the UCISD did not content the change.[9]
On January 1, 2023, Gonzales and Gonzalez left the agency.[11]
On January 18, 2024, the DOJ released information on their investigation. The DOJ found "cascading failures" by Arredondo and other "policy and training deficiencies".[4][12]
A grand jury indicted Arredondo and Gonzales.[8][13]
On June 27, 2024, Arredondo was arrested and charged with 10 counts of child endangerment.[8]
Gonzales was arrested and charged with 29 counts of abandoning/endangering a child.[14]
On July 25, 2024, Gonzales pleaded not guilty.[15]
