On March 1, 2022, Mendoza and three other plainclothes officers were looking for a witness in a firearm investigation.[3] Officers encountered 12-year-old Siderio and another person, one of whom was holding a gun.[4] Police claim that Siderio fired at the vehicle. Broken glass injured one of the officers.[1]

Mendoza and another officer exited the vehicle and each fired their weapons.[1] Mendoza chased Siderio and saw him throw away a gun. Siderio either surrendered or fell before Mendoza fired again at a close distance, striking Siderio.[3]

Officers took Siderio to the hospital, where he died.[5]

The officers were not wearing body-worn cameras.[5] The incident was captured on two cameras.[1]
