Sayed Faisal (2023)
Overview
On January 4, 2023, police received a call about a man with a large knife who had jumped out of an apartment window and was cutting himself with the knife and broken glass.[1][2]
Cambridge Massachusetts Police Department officers located Faisal, who ran through the neighborhood. After several blocks, Faisal turned towards the officers and refused their commands to drop the knife. A less-lethal sponge weapon was used, but was ineffective. Officer Liam McMahon shot Faisal with their service weapon. Officers rendered medical aid before paramedics arrived. Faisal died at the hospital.[1][2]
McMahon was placed on paid administrative leave.[3]
On October 5, 2023, the Middlesex District Attorney announced that the shooting "was justified and does not constitute a criminal act" and McMahon would not be prosecuted.[4]
