2020 Arrest of Safiya Satchell

On January 14, 2020, Martel was working an off-duty security detail at a nightclub when he was asked by management to trespass Satchell for being disorderly.[2]

Martel found Satchell in her car and dragged her from the vehicle when she refused to comply with his instructions. Satchell resisted, including kicking and punching Martel. Martel took Satchell to the ground, knelt on her neck, and tased her twice.[2]

The incident was captured on a witness's cell phone and Martel's body-worn camera.[1][3]

Satchell was arrested on third-degree felony charges of resisting an officer with violence and battery on a law-enforcement officer. The charges were later dropped by prosecutors.[2]

Response Timeline

On June 25, 2020, Martel was arrested on four charges of battery and two charges for official misconduct after he allegedly filed two reports on the arrest containing falsehoods.[1]

On June 23, 2023, a jury found Martel guilty of one count each of battery and trespassing. The battery conviction was for improper use of his Taser. Martel was found not guilty of the other battery and official misconduct charges, which included the excessive force of kneeling on Satchell's neck.[4]

On August 30, 2023, Martel was sentenced to 30 days in jail, 250 hours of community service, and 18 months of probation.[5]

2020 Improper Procedure

In February 2020, Martel was involved in a crash in his patrol car.

2020 Arrest of Miguel McKay

On March 21, 2020, Martel and Officer Javier Castano claimed to see McKay doing "doughnuts" in a gas station parking lot. The officers broke a window on the truck, and beat McKay.[2]

The incident was captured on video.[2]

On June 18, 2020, Martel and Castano were fired.[2]
