Overview

Suspect killed by Pinellas deputies had BB gun, Clearwater police say

On June 29, 2022, Hubbard's cousin contacted the Hillsborough County Florida Sheriff's Office to report that Hubbard had used social media to announce his intention to shoot anyone who got in his way, including police officers. Later that day, Hubbard stole a golf cart, attempted an armed carjacking, and succeeded with another armed carjacking.[1][2]

Later in the day, the Pasco County Florida Sheriff's Office was called to a report of a man driving the stolen vehicle around a parking lot while waving a gun, and later to an attempted armed robbery at a restaurant.[2]

On June 30, 2022, a Pinellas County Florida Sheriff's Office deputy's license plate scanner identified the stolen vehicle, which several deputies pursued for 80 minutes. Deputies deflated all of the vehicle's tires using a stop stick and utilized a PIT maneuver to stop the car. Hubbard exited the vehicle, pointed his gun at deputies, and began walking towards a police car. Deputy Robert Smith fired at Hubbard through his windshield. Deputy Daniel Abbot, Corporal Anthony Hellstern, and Detective Damarcus Flournoy also fired at Hubbard.[1]

Hubbard ran away as deputies continued firing, until he collapsed. Officers rendered aid. Hubbard died at the scene.[1][2]

On August 18, 2022, the State Attorney's Office determined that the deputies were acting "in performance of their legal duties" and that the "death constitutes a justifiable homicide".[1][2]
