Robert Anderson (2021)
Overview
On August 25, 2021, several Del Norte County California Sheriff's Office deputies and California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers responded to the scene of a disabled vehicle that was blocking the roadway in Crescent City, CA. Upon their arrival, they located a male subject holding a knife and walking in the traffic lanes. [1] As seen in body-worn camera footage, Anderson later picked the knife up from the ground and lunged towards officers, who fired on him. He was handcuffed and treated for his injuries, but they proved fatal.[2]
The CHP Northern Division Critical Incident Investigation Team, the CHP Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team, the Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office, the Del Norte County District Attorney’s Office, and the California Attorney General’s Office are investigating.[3]
Video
The Sheriff's Department stated that footage exists from multiple body-worn cameras.[3]
The CHP said it will not release its video footage of the incident until October, to not jeopardize the investigation into Anderson’s death.[2]
On September 11, 2021, the department released the body-worn camera footage.
