Overview

Body-worn camera footage

On October 2, 2022, Detroit Michigan Police Department officers were called about a knife-wielding man who was having a mental health crisis. Officers located Burks, who was carrying a knife. Officers ordered Burks to drop the knife, but he did not comply. Burks ran towards the officers, who shot him.[1][2][3] Officer Seamus Waderlow was one of the officers involved.[4]

Officers rendered medical aid after the shooting and drove him to the hospital in a police car.[4] Burks was pronounced dead at the hospital.[1]

The incident was captured on body-worn cameras.[1]

The officers were placed on administrative leave.[2]

In November 2022, Burks' family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the city.[1]

On November 23, 2022, the District Attorney decided not to prosecute the officers.[1]
