Overview

On March 19, 2019, Ankeny Iowa Police Department Officer Tony Higgins and another officer responded to a report of a burglary in progress at a local business. The officers found the door had been forced open, and encountered Regenold, who was wearing a mask. Police said Regenold refused to comply with officers' commands and was shot when he advanced on the police. He was unarmed.[1]

On March 21, 2019, Regenold was charged with third-degree burglary, possession of burglary tools, fifth-degree criminal mischief, and probation violation.[2]

On March 2, 2021, Regenold filed civil rights lawsuit against Higgins. Attorneys said video camera footage showed Regenold was unarmed and complying with the officers when he was shot.[3][4]

On September 23, 2021, the city of Ankeny agreed to a $500,000 settlement with Regenold.[4]

Regenold pleaded guilty to third-degree burglary and was sentenced to five years of probation.[4]
