Overview

On April 20, 2022, several officers, including St. Louis County Minnesota Sheriff's Office deputies Gavin Nichols and Cody Dillinger, and Virginia Minnesota Police Department Officer Nick Grivna attempted to arrest Johnson, who was wanted on multiple felony charges. Johnson came out of his house "with knives in his hands".[1]

Nichols fired foam rounds, followed by Dillinger and Grivna firing their handguns. Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene.[1]

The incident was recorded by body-worn cameras and dash cameras.[1]

All three officers were placed on leave.[1]

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) opened an investigation.[2]

On July 21, 2022, the BCA sent the results of their investigation to the St. Louis County Attorney's Office.[2]

The county Attorney's Office found that an objectively reasonable officer would believe there was a threat of death or great bodily harm, and their actions were reasonable.[2]
