Overview

Critical Incident Briefing

On January 31, 2023, Los Angeles County California Sheriff's Department deputies were attempting locate Bustillos for an outstanding warrant. When they made contact, Bustillos fired at the deputies, who returned fire. Bustillos barricaded himself in a garage. Bustillos left the garage and encountered other deputies. Bustillos fired at the deputies, who returned fire, striking him. Bustillos was treated at the scene and taken to the hospital.[1]

Deputies Edwin Barajas, Leonel Leon, Victor Garcia, Timothy Cho, Chase Morales, and Steve Medina were involved.[1]

Parts of the incident were captured on body-worn cameras and a surveillance camera.[2]

Bustillos was charged with five counts of attempted murder on a peace officer, felon on possession of a firearm, and possession of a firearm on school grounds.[2]

The department opened a criminal investigation.[1]
