2024 Death of Kevin Price
On August 12, 2024, officers were called to a disturbance. A witness directed the officers to a house, where officers knocked "for an extended period of time". Officers entered the house and encountered Price, who had a knife. Price refused orders to drop the knife and approached the officers. Johnston fired, striking Price.[1][3]
Officers rendered aid until paramedics arrived.[3]
On August 15, 2024, Price died at the hospital.[1]
The incident was captured on officers' body-worn cameras.[1]

Johnston was placed on adminstrative assignment.[1]
An investigation will be conducted by an independent agency, which is required under state law for incidents where a person dies during an encounter with a police officer. The state Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) opened an investigation.[1]
On December 10, 2024, the Dane County District Attorney announced that no charges would be filed against Johnston as "a person who is armed with a knife who does not follow directions to drop the weapon and stop as directed by police may pose a threat of great bodily harm and/or death to officers".[4]
