Overview

On November 25, 2021, Algona Iowa Police Department Officer Grant Smith responded to a disturbance at a motel. Officers encountered Cavazos, who did not comply with officers’ commands and drove his vehicle toward Smith, prompting him to fire one round.[1]

After a short pursuit, Cavazos lost control of his vehicle and crashed. Cavazos was not injured in the shooting, but suffered injuries in the crash.[1]

Cavazos was charged with assault on a peace officer using a dangerous weapon, attempted second degree burglary, assault with intent to inflict serious injury, eluding, and operating while under the influence (first offense).[1]

On November 25, 2021, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) opened an investigation.[2]
