Commendations
2020 County Council Resolution
On February 18, 2020, the County Council of Anne Arundel County passed a resolution to express their "infinite gratitude" to Preece and Detective Scott Ballard after their injuries during the pursuit of a murder suspect.[3] See below.
2021 Victims' Rights Honoree
In May 2021, Preece and other officers were recognized by the Anne Arundel County State's Attorney for their work to "protect and support those in our community impacted by violence".[4]
Incident Reports
2020 Pursuit of Joseph Willis
On February 5, 2020, Preece and Detective Scott Ballard were investigating a murder and worked to locate the victim's car. Hours later, the detectives attempted to pull over the car. Willis fired at them. Ballard was struck and went to a nearby store to get help. Preece continued the chase, which ended when Willis bailed out of the car and shot at Preece, injuring him.[5]
Willis was eventually captured, pleaded guilty to the original murder and attempted murder of the deputies, and was sentenced to three consecutive life sentences in prison.[6]
2023 DUI
On March 17, 2023, officers responded to a single-vehicle crash and located a car that had hit a sign. Preece, the driver, showed signs of impairment.[2]
