Overview

On December 17, 2023, Alatorre was seen talking to herself in a recreation center, saying, "I have to defend myself". Staff attempted to get Alatorre to exit the center's bathroom. Police were called and escorted her from the building. The center did not want to press charges. As the officers were leaving, Alatorre blocked a police vehicle and challenged the officer to a fight. Alatorre walked away and the officers left.[1]

Soon after, two people called the police to report that Alatorre had threatened them with a handgun. Officers arrived, but Alatorre did not comply with their commands. Officers fired less-lethal bean bags at her, which were ineffective. Alatorre pointed her handgun at officers several times, prompting Boulder Colorado Police Department Officer Nathan Schultz to fire, striking Alatorre. Believing that Alatorre was attempting to sit up and fire at officers, Officer Jarrett Mastriona fired, striking Alatorre.[1]

Officers rendered aid until paramedics arrived. Alatorre died at the scene.[1]

Part of the incident was captured on officers' body-worn cameras, an in-vehicle camera, surveillance cameras, and by witnesses.

The District Attorney's Critical Incident Team opened an investigation.[1]

On March 7, 2024, the District Attorney determined that the shooting was reasonable, as Alatorre "posed a threat to the lives of others".[1]
