Jarrel Johnson (2020)
Overview
On May 3, 2020, Marlboro County South Carolina Sheriff's Department deputies arrested Johnson for beating his father with a baseball bat and his fists.[1][2]
At the jail, Deputy David Cook requested assistance in controlling Johnson and Sheriff Charles Lemmon responded. Initial reports stated that Johnson assaulted Lemmon in an attempt to flee.[1]
In a video of the incident, Johnson is being placed in a cell when Lemmon orders deputies to remove the handcuffs and "tase the hell out of him".[3][2] After the handcuffs were removed, Johnson ran and was tased at least three times.[4]
Johnson was charged with the attempted murder of his father and assault on a police officer.[1]
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) opened an investigation.[5]
On December 14, 2021, Lemmon and Cook were indicted on charges of assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, and misconduct in office.[2] If convicted, the charge of assault carries a sentence of up to 20 years in prison and the misconduct charge up to 10 years in prison.[4]
On December 21, 2021, Lemmon and Cook pleaded not guilty.[6]
On December 14, 2021, Lemmon was suspended by the Governor pending the disposition of the charges.[7]
