Hunter Jessup (2023)
Overview
On November 7, 2023, Baltimore Maryland Police Department officers William Healy, Brittany Routh, Justin Oliva, and Brandon Columbo attempted to stop Jessup, who they believed to be armed. Jessup fled and refused orders to drop his weapon. One officer attempted to tackle Jessup, who drew a handgun and pointed it at the officer. The other officers shot Jessup.[1] Earlier reports did not state that Jessup fired, but later ones stated that he fired 7 shots.[2]
Jessup died at the hospital.[1]
The incident was captured on officers' body-worn cameras.[1]
On November 7, 2023, the Maryland Attorney General's Office opened an investigation.[2]
On November 17, 2023, the agency released the officers' body-worn camera video.[3]
The officers were placed on administrative leave.[4]
On January 20, 2024, the state Attorney General announced that they would not be filing criminal charges against the officers as their actions did not constitute a criminal offense under Maryland law.[2]
