News report with incident video

On July 27, 2022, Oak Lawn Illinois Police Department officers Patrick O'Donnell, Brandon Collins, and Mark Hollingsworth stopped a vehicle that smelled of marijuana. Abuatelah was a passenger, and ran away as officers started searching him. Abuatelah was taken to the ground and resisted efforts to be handcuffed. The officers punched Abuatelah in the head and legs before Collins deployed his Taser.[1][2]

Oak Lawn officers were not equipped with body-worn cameras at the time of the incident. Parts of the incident were captured by an in-vehicle camera and a witness's cell phone.[3]

Abuatelah was hospitalized for fractures to his face, skull and pelvis, and swelling of his brain.[1]

Abuatelah was charged with gun possession after a handgun was found in the messenger bag he was wearing.[3]

The Chief claimed the actions were in line with the officers' training.[1]

Abuatelah's family filed a lawsuit against the officers and the village.[1]

On February 14, 2023, a grand jury charged O'Donnell with aggravated battery and official misconduct.[1]

On March 1, 2023, O'Donnell pleaded not guilty.[4]
