On March 31, 2020, California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers stopped Bronstein and detained him for suspicion of DUI. At the police station, Bronstein refused to have his blood taken, and several officers pinned him down in order to draw the blood. Bronstein said "I can't breathe" several times before becoming unresponsive.[1][2] Officers attempted CPR 11 minutes after Bronstein's last complaint. Bronstein was pronounced dead.[3]

The incident was recorded by Sergeant Michael Little.[3]

The officers were placed on administrative leave.[2]

On December 9, 2020, Bronstein's family filed a lawsuit against the officers for use of excessive force in violation of the Fourth and Fourteenth Amendments.[4]

On March 15, 2022, video of the arrest was released as part of the family's lawsuit.[1]

On March 6, 2023, Bronstein's family settled their lawsuit against the city for $24 million.[5][6]

On March 29, 2023, the Los Angeles County District Attorney announced charges against a CHP sergeant and six officers of involuntary manslaughter and assault under the color of authority. Each faces up to four years and eight months in state prison. A registered nurse at the scene was charged involuntary manslaughter and faces up to four years in prison.[2]
