2022 Shooting Deaths of Benison and Maria Tran
On August 8, 2022, Williams repeatedly rang the Trans' doorbell and demanded to talk. Police were called, and the responding officer allegedly gave Williams "preferential treatment".[3]
On September 7, 2022, police were called on a report of an intruder with a gun. Responding officers found the Trans had been shot and killed. Witnesses identified the shooter as Williams, who had left the scene.[1][4]
Williams, who was off-duty, discarded the weapon, which was his duty firearm.[2][1]
Response Timeline
On September 7, 2022, Williams turned himself in.[1][5][6]
Williams was arrested for suspicion of double homicide and potential special circumstances that could make him eligible for the death penalty.[2]
On December 12, 2022, Williams pleaded not guilty.[7]
On July 25, 2023, the state Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) temporarily suspended Williams' certification during the criminal investigation and for "egregious or repeated acts that violate the law".[8]
In 2023, family members filed a lawsuit against the county, the Sheriff's Office, and the Sheriff.[3]
On October 3, 2024, a jury found Williams guilty of first-degree murder. Williams faces up to 50 years in prison.[9][10]
On November 10, 2024, a judge sentenced to 50 years to life in state prison.[11]
