Social Media 7.3.23 OIS Video

On July 3, 2023, Orlando Florida Police Department officers including Jose Velez suspected Diaz of doing drugs in his car. Velez ordered Diaz to turn off his car and to hand him items from inside the vehicle before opening the driver's door. Diaz ignored orders to put his hands on the steering wheel and started reaching in the center console. Velez shot Diaz.[1]

Officers removed Diaz from the vehicle and rendered aid until paramedics arrived. Diaz died at the hospital.[1]

The incident was captured on officers' body-worn cameras.[1]

Velez was placed on paid administrative leave.[1]

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement opened an investigation.[1]

On April 1, 2024, a grand jury refused to indict Velez.[2]
