2016 Death of Daniel Shaver
In January 2016, Mesa Arizona Police Department officers were called to a hotel on a report that someone was pointing a gun out of a window. Officers, including Brailsford, located Shaver, and ordered him to exit his hotel room, lie face-down in the hallway, and then crawl towards the officers. Shaver complied, but reached towards his waistline during the process. Brailsford shot Shaver, killing him.[2]

On March 4, 2016, Brailsford was charged with one count of second-degree murder.[3]
On March 21, 2016, Brailsford was fired.[1]
In 2017, Shaver's wife filed a wrongful death lawsuit.[2]
On December 7, 2017, a jury acquitted Brailsford of second-degree murder.[4]
Shaver's parents filed a lawsuit.[2]
In August 2018, Brailsford was rehired by the department, allowed to apply for his pension, and then retired for medical reasons.[2] Brailsford claimed post-traumic stress disorder from the shooting.[5]
In 2021, Shaver's parents reached a settlement with the city.[2]
On November 22, 2022, Shavers's wife reached a settlement with the city for $8 million.[2]
