Overview

On July 25, 2023, Terre Haute Indiana Police Department officers responded to a call of an armed person who had threatened employees inside of a business. Officers attempted to communicate with Fortin during a two-hour standoff. Fortin exited from a window and moved through a parking lot. Officers David Pounds and Adam Neese approached Fortin, who ignored their commands to show his hands and get on the ground. Fortin drew a handgun from his pocket and pointed it at the officers, who fired.[1][2]

Officers rendered medical aid. Fortin was pronounced dead at the hospital.[1]

The incident was captured on body-worn cameras and surveillance cameras.[1]

The officers were placed on administrative leave.[1]

The Indiana State Police opened an investigation.[1]

On August 1, 2023, the County Prosecutor announced that the shooting was justified and the officers would not face criminal charges.[1]
