2021 Death of Charles Sharp
On September 14, 2021, Sharp called police to report two burglars in his back yard, one of whom was armed with a handgun. As Oldrati exited his vehicle, Corporal Robert Layton said, "he's got a handgun on him, right there". Oldrati fired at Sharp multiple times.[4]
Officers and paramedics rendered aid. Sharp died at the hospital.[4]
The incident was captured on Oldrati's body-worn camera.[5]
Response Timeline
The New Jersey Attorney General's Office opened an investigation, which is required when a person dies during an encounter with a law enforcement officer. The Attorney General must present the case to a grand jury to determine if the evidence supports the return of an indictment against the officer or officers involved.[6]
On May 23, 2023, a grand jury indicted Oldrati for manslaughter. Oldrati faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted.[4][6]
Oldrati was placed on administrative suspension.[4]
