Critical Incident Video

On June 29, 2024, Downey California Police Department Sergeant Jason Klevos and Officer Robert Ramirez were dispatched to a disturbance between a neighbor and Arenas, who lit fireworks.[1] Officers talked to Arenas through a fence for over an hour. Arenas pointed a weapon over the fence. Officers fired, striking Arenas.[2]

Officers rendered aid.[2] Arenas died at the scene.[1]

The incident was captured on multiple officers' body-worn cameras.

The weapon was determined to be an airsoft rifle.[1]

The California Department of Justice will conduct an independent investigation of the shooting, which is required under state law for officer-involved shootings of unarmed individuals.[3]
