Alameda County California Sheriff's Office Psychological Evaluations (2016-2022)
Overview
On September 7, 2022, Alameda County California Sheriff's Office Deputy Devin Williams, Jr. killed his girlfriend and her husband. Williams was fired and arrested for murder.
The Sheriff's Office began an examination of the records of all deputies hired since 2016 and determined that 47 of them had scored a "D. Not Suited" on their psychological examination. The County had hired them based on guidance received from the California Commission on Police Officers Standards and Training (POST), but that was incorrect under state law.[1][2]
On September 23, 2022, the department announced that the affected deputies could work in other roles, but that they would not be allowed to carry a firearm or perform the functions of peace officers.[1][3]
The deputies can get a second opinion. If rated "Suitable", that would allow the Sheriff to hire them as peace officers.[1]
